Although the gen 6 starters haven't been around too long when compared to some of their older peers, they've still made quite the impression with fans of the series. It certainly helps that Greninja was one of Ash's strongest Pokemon in the anime , as too does the fact that all three of them are dual-type Pokemon.
That their second stage forms can be caught in the Friend Safari is also a big plus, as it allows players to build a team with all three of them fairly easily if they so wish. Picking the best gen 6 starter Pokemon is incredibly difficult as there are two exceptional candidates to choose from.
Froakie's final form, Greninja, is probably the better of the three third-stage evolutions and will crush the Elite Four. On the other hand, Delphox has a type advantage against more gyms.
In fact, given that players should already have a pretty well-balanced team by the time they reach the end of the game, the fire-type Pokemon is probably the more useful of the two.
Litten's evolutionary line is particularly well-designed , although all three starters look great when compared to some of the other, more recent, starters. When it comes to combat, Litten once again leads the way, with Incineroar's fire and dark-type combination making it incredibly useful in certain situations. The other two also have some fairly unique type combinations as well though, and this can make building a team around them considerably easier than it is in certain other generations.
Litten and Popplio both have their strengths, but the former's struggles during some of the games' opening stages make Popplio the better choice. Its stats are generally quite well-balanced too and it also has a decent move set available to it. What makes it unique is that it undertakes photosynthesis in its body and creates oxygen. When Turtwig undergoes evolution to Torterra, it becomes a very well-balanced Pokemon.
With an attack standing at , defense of , and stamina of , it is as versatile of a Pokemon as you will find in terms of sheer base stats. Sobble is a water-type Pokemon. With its ability to camouflage itself in water and make everyone around it cry when they cry, this Pokemon can hide as well as escape if caught.
These two skills are valuable. What makes it worth fighting with however is its evolution form: Inteleon. This is due to its unique combination of hiding and water shooting abilities. Inteleon is also highly intelligent. While its base stats are not extraordinary, its special attack stands at Combined with its above-average speed this Pokemon is a valuable asset to have.
Fennekin is a fire-type Pokemon. While its base form is okay, its evolved form to Delphox is what makes it stand out more. Delphox attack score is , while its resistance to Fairy, Fighting, Fire, Grass, Ice, Psychic, and Steel types makes it easy to rely on when against a wide range of Pokemon.
With its signature move being the famous Fire Spin, it has a good balance of offensive damage and resistance. Emboar is its second evolution form, and it is one of the most powerful Pokemon in terms of sheer power.
Its disbalance between its attack and 65 defense means that you need to strategize in order to utilize it. With its low defense and speed but high attack level, Emboar is best utilized among a fast Pokemon who can give Emboar time to charge and deliver its blows.
A water type, it evolves in Blastoise. With two water cannons on its shell at all times, it is said that Blastoise can shoot through a mountain and at a distance of 10km.
While it cannot use precise shooting, it shoots water at a large density so that it can overpower enemies. With its legendary status, overwhelming water power, and high stats of attack and defense, this Pokemon is a huge help in battle.
This Fire-type Pokemon evolves into Incineroar. This gives it multiple assets needed for it to succeed in battle. The final member of the Generation I trio, Squirtle certainly warrants praise at every turn. It is perhaps the strongest of the three starters from the Kanto region, as it can handle more damage, while also dishing out effective attacks. It is also iconic in the anime, as the Squirtle Squad produces some of the best comedy in the series. It instantly has an advantage compared to earlier starters, as it's not only a Water-type but also later becomes a Ground-type.
Thus it has an array of attacks that help its chances when in battle. Therefore, it is able to last longer than most, and that is still the case when facing stronger opponents.

Paired with solid defenses, Empoleon can be rather tricky for an unprepared player to KO. While somewhat slow, Empoleon has otherwise solid stats with high defense. Between defensive typing and defensive stats, Empoleon is able to sustain several hits as it sets up various hazards for an opponent's team. It is even quite adept at stalling due to its access to defensive moves like Protect that help it stay around longer.
When paired with a Leftovers , Empoleon can be a huge nuisance for opponents to deal with. Due to its high offensive stats and speed, Infernape is capable of serving as a mixed attacker , using both physical and special moves.
